Only 1 percent. That is the acceptance rate for the UNU-WIDER Visiting PhD Fellowship in recent years. Out of every hundred doctoral researchers who apply, 99 do not make it.
That number is not here to discourage anyone. It is here because understanding why most applications fail is the most useful thing a prospective applicant can know before writing one.
The fellowship places selected PhD researchers at the United Nations University World Institute for Development Economics Research in Helsinki, Finland for three months. It comes with a €2100 monthly stipend a travel grant and medical insurance.
Fellows work alongside leading development economists, present their research at UNU-WIDER seminars and may publish through the WIDER Working Paper Series. The September application round is open right now.

What the Fellowship Offers
- Fellows spend 3 months at the UNU-WIDER research institute in Helsinki, Finland.
- During the fellowship, you will work with UNU-WIDER researchers whose research interests are related to your PhD topic.
- Fellows are expected to work on one or more research papers during their stay.
- You will also have to present your research findings in a UNU-WIDER seminar.
- If your research is strong and relevant, it may be considered for publication in the WIDER Working Paper Series.
- The fellowship provides:

Who This Programme Is Built For
UNU-WIDER is an economics research institute. That focus shapes who gets selected.
The fellowship targets PhD researchers who are:
- Currently enrolled in a recognized doctoral programme
- Conducting research related to developing economies
- At a relatively advanced stage of their PhD
- Capable of independent high quality research
- Fluent in written and spoken English
- Equipped with strong quantitative and or qualitative analytical skills
Researchers from economics and related social science disciplines are the primary audience. Candidates from other disciplines can apply but they need to demonstrate a clear and specific connection between their proposed research and development economics. A vague interdisciplinary link will not hold up under competitive review.
UNU-WIDER actively encourages applications from early career researchers, women researchers and researchers from developing countries.
The advanced stage requirement is meaningful. This fellowship is designed for researchers who are close enough to completion that concentrated time in Helsinki can genuinely accelerate their dissertation. It is not for those still developing their theoretical framework in the early years of study.
The 1 Percent Problem and What It Tells You
A 1% acceptance rate may sound very difficult, and it is. But the main reason is not that 99% of applicants are weak.
- Research fellowships are highly competitive.
- Many strong applicants are rejected because their research does not clearly match the institution’s current work.
- UNU-WIDER publishes its research priorities and work programme, so applicants should study them carefully.
- Your research should have a clear connection with the topics UNU-WIDER is currently working on.
- A general application that could be sent to any development economics institute is unlikely to stand out.
- Your application should explain why your research fits UNU-WIDER specifically.
- It should also show why you want to work with its researchers at this particular time.
- Strong candidates usually make this connection very clear in their application.
- Before submitting, ask yourself: “Why does this research belong at UNU-WIDER, and why now?”

Applications must be submitted through UNU-WIDER’s online portal only. Email and postal applications are not accepted.
The portal opened on 1 September for the current round and closes on 30 September 2026 at 23:59 UTC+3.

- Reference letter from PhD supervisor
The supervisor’s reference letter serves a dual purpose. It supports the application and confirms current enrollment in a doctoral programme. It must be submitted directly by the supervisor not uploaded by the applicant to phdreference@wider.unu.edu.
Tell your supervisor early. The letter goes to a separate email address that applicants do not control. Missing this step means an incomplete application.

Applicants applying in the March round deadline 31 March undertake their fellowship from September to November of the same year.
Before You Submit A Practical Checklist
The application window closes in less than 30 days. Confirm these points before submitting:
- Your research is explicitly connected to developing economies
- You are at an advanced stage of your PhD not early coursework
- Your proposed research aligns with UNU-WIDER’s current work programme; check their website
- Your supervisor has been contacted and is prepared to send the reference letter to phdreference@wider.unu.edu before the deadline
- Your CV reflects research outputs, analytical skills and academic standing clearly
- Your application explains specifically why UNU-WIDER not just why Helsinki or why a research fellowship
