AKS Hanmun Fellowship 2026 in Korea – Fully Funded

The AKS Hanmun Fellowship 2026 is a fully funded program by the Academy of Korean Studies (AKS) for international students in Korean Studies. The fellowship offers basic and advanced courses in Classical Chinese (Hanmun), covering tuition, airfare, monthly stipend, accommodation, and cultural programs.

About the Fellowship

The Academy of Korean Studies (AKS) in Seongnam, Korea, is a global hub for Korean Studies. To strengthen expertise in Classical Chinese (Hanmun), AKS runs the Hanmun Fellowship for international scholars.

The program combines:

Eligibility Criteria

  • Must be an undergraduate, master’s, or doctoral student in Korean Studies at an overseas university.
  • Korean nationals and graduates are not eligible.
  • Advanced Korean language is required (lectures are in Korean).
  • For the Advanced Course, applicants must show proof of completing a Hanmun course or an earlier AKS Hanmun Fellowship certificate.

Required Documents

For All Applicants:

  • Application form (download from AKS site).
  • Certificate of enrollment (or proof of degree in progress).
  • Reference letter from academic advisor explaining why Hanmun study is necessary.
  • TOPIK (Korean language test) score report (if available).

For Advanced Course Applicants (choose one):

  • Transcript or certificate proving completion of a Hanmun course, OR
  • Certificate of completion from a previous AKS Hanmun Fellowship.

All documents must be in Korean or English (otherwise notarized translation required).

  • Mencius
  • Samguksagi (Chronicles of the Three States)
  • Collected Commentaries of Elementary Learning

Advanced Course may include:

  • Analects of Confucius
  • Mencius (advanced readings)
  • Samgukyusa (Memorabilia of the Three Kingdoms)
  • Prose readings and advanced texts

Application Timeline

  • Application period: Sept 15 – Oct 17, 2025 (KST).
  • Document screening results: Oct 28, 2025 (via email).
  • Video interviews: Nov 4 – 6, 2025.
  • Final selection announcement: Nov 12, 2025 (via email).

  5. If shortlisted, attend the video interview.

Extra Support

  • Fellows must submit a study report 15 days before the semester ends.
  • An online info session (webinar) will be held on Sept 26, 2025 at 17:00 KST for interested applicants.
  • Current fellows will share experiences during the session.
