Wallace Fellowship 2027 at Harvard’s Villa I Tatti: $5,200 Monthly Stipend in Florence

Most people think about Renaissance research in a small way. They think about popes. They think about Medici rulers. They think about painters working inside one city. Harvard’s Berenson Fellowship does not think this way. It funds scholars who study how Italy made links with other parts of the world. This can be Africa. This can be Asia. This can be Latin America. This can be the wider Mediterranean world. All of this happened during the Renaissance period.

If your research looks at these kinds of global links this fully funded fellowship offers something special. You get months of free time to do research. You get to live in a historic villa in Florence. You get strong money support behind you.

Where This Fellowship Comes From

The fellowship is based at Villa I Tatti. This is Harvard’s Center for Italian Renaissance Studies. It is funded through The Lila Wallace Reader’s Digest Fund. The idea behind it comes from Bernard Berenson. He was an art historian. He believed the Renaissance should not be seen as only an Italian story. He believed it should be seen as a world story.

This is what the fellowship wants to support. It wants research on Italy in the World. This research can cover the 14th century all the way to the 17th century.

Who Can Apply

The fellowship is open to many subjects. This makes it a strong research fellowship for scholars from different fields. These include:

Architecture, art history and visual arts, history, philosophy, literature, music, history of science

This means the fellowship is not only for art historians. A philosopher can apply too. A historian who studies science can also apply. The subject just needs to fit the main theme.

The basic eligibility criteria to apply are:

  • You must have a finished PhD.
  • You need the certificate at the time you apply.
  • You cannot be doing a second PhD at the same time.
  • You need strong English skills.
  • You need to know Italian well enough to work with it.
  • You must be ready to do most of your research in Florence.

Younger and mid career scholars get first priority. But scholars from any stage in the world can still apply. One important point is this. The fellowship wants to hear from scholars who do not normally get easy access to Italian research places. This shows the fellowship is not only for people who already have strong resources.

Fellowship Coverage

This fellowship stipend is real and strong. Here is what you get:

5200 US dollars every month. A one time payment of up to 1800 US dollars to help you move. Full access to the Biblioteca Berenson. This library is open every day of the week. Your own desk or study space. Free lunch on weekdays with other scholars. A chance to join talks, concerts and events at Villa I Tatti.

If housing is open at the villa, you may get a free room. You only pay for things like electricity and water. If there is no room at the villa, you get money instead. This money helps you pay rent somewhere else in Florence.

When you put all of this together, it is a strong fellowship benefits package. You get money. You get housing help. You get daily meals with other scholars. This means you can focus fully on your research. You do not need to worry about daily costs all the time.

What You Are Expected To Do

This fellowship wants deep focus. You must work only on the project you wrote in your research proposal. You cannot work on another book at the same time. You cannot work on other articles at the same time.

Because you live there, you must also follow these rules:

You must live in the Florence area during your fellowship. You must spend at least three days each week at Villa I Tatti. You must take part in talks and events there.

You also cannot hold another job at the same time. This means no other fellowship. This means no teaching job. Even part time teaching is not allowed. If you teach right now, you will need to pause that work.

Choosing Your Fellowship Length And Time

You can choose a four-month residency or a six-month residency. You also choose your term:

Fall Term runs from September to December. Winter Spring Term runs from January to June.

Here is something very important to know. This fellowship can only be given to you once in your whole career. You also cannot delay it to a later year. If you win it you must be fully ready to go during your chosen term.

What Your Application Needs

You can write your fellowship application in English or in Italian. Everything is done online. You will need:

A finished online application. A research plan. Your CV. A scanned copy of your PhD certificate. Any extra papers that Villa I Tatti asks for.

One rule to remember. You can only apply for one I Tatti fellowship in the same year. If there is more than one fellowship offered pick the one that fits your work best.

Letters Of Recommendation

You need two teachers or senior scholars who know your work well. They must send a private letter of recommendation about you. This letter can be in English or Italian.

Ask them early. Do not wait. The letter deadline comes a few days after the main deadline. This gap exists so your referees have real time to write something strong. If you ask too late they may rush the letter or miss the date.

Key Dates

Fellowship application deadline is 16 November 2026. Recommendation letters deadline is 21 November 2026. Fellowship lasts four or six months. Location is Florence Italy.

All applications must be sent online by midnight Cambridge Massachusetts time on 16 November 2026. If you live in a very different time zone check this time carefully. Do not wait for the last hour.

Why Florence Matters

Florence is not just a nice place to live. It is the true heart of Renaissance art and history. Being there gives you real access to old archives and collections. You also join a group of scholars from many fields. For research about Italy and its links to the world this kind of place adds something books alone cannot give.

The Biblioteca Berenson plus daily talks with other scholars create a strong academic research community. New ideas grow faster when you can talk about them every day. This is hard to copy from far away.

Is This Fellowship Right For You

If your research truly looks at Italy’s links to the wider world during the Renaissance this postdoctoral fellowship may be perfect for you. It covers art. It covers philosophy. It covers science. It covers literature. It offers real money. It offers deep research time. It offers a special place to work in Florence.

Since the letters take time to prepare and since you can only win this fellowship once start getting ready early. Do not wait until the final weeks before 16 November 2026.
