Most prestigious American fellowships are designed for Americans.
This one is not.
The Maurice R. Greenberg World Fellows Program at Yale University is open exclusively to citizens of countries other than the United States. US citizens cannot apply. The fellowship was built specifically to bring outstanding professionals from across the globe to New Haven for four months of fully funded residential study leadership development and cross-sector networking.
Applications for the Yale World Fellows Program 2027 cohort are open now. The deadline is 2 December 2026.

What the Fellowship Covers
The program is fully funded. No tuition, no accommodation costs, no out-of-pocket travel expenses.
Every selected World Fellow receives:
- Return airfare to and from the USA
- Monthly stipend to cover living expenses during the program
- Furnished apartment on or near Yale’s campus, one or two bedrooms for the full four-month duration
- Medical insurance for the fellowship period
For professionals who would otherwise need to fund four months away from work and home out of their own pocket, this package removes the financial barrier entirely. The furnished apartment is particularly significant. Fellows are not placed in student dormitories or short-term rentals. They are given a proper home for the duration.
Eligibility Requirements
The eligibility requirements are specific, and the career stage window is where many applicants trip up.
To be eligible, you must:
- Be a citizen of any country except the United States
- Be fluent in English; IELTS or TOEFL not required
- Be between five and twenty-five years into your professional career
- Be available to live full-time at Yale in New Haven for the entire four-month program
- Have demonstrated significant achievements in your field
- Show commitment to creating impact at the local, national or international level
There is no minimum or maximum age limit. Career stage, not age, is the qualifying measure.
That 5-25 year window matters. Someone two years out of graduate school is too early. Someone thirty years into a senior career may fall outside the upper boundary. The program targets professionals who have already built something meaningful and are still actively shaping their trajectory.
The Four Months at Yale
This is not a conference or a short-term visit. Fellows relocate to New Haven and become part of Yale’s community for the full duration.
The program runs across several interconnected tracks:
Weekly seminars bring the cohort together to share work, exchange ideas and discuss approaches to global challenges. Fellows introduce their own experience and engage with the perspectives of peers from across different sectors and countries.
Personal development includes individual and group coaching, skills development training and structured reflection on leadership practice.
University engagement means fellows participate in panels, share expertise with students and faculty and mentor Yale students who apply to serve as their program liaisons.
Networking happens organically across all of it. A cohort of accomplished professionals from different countries, disciplines and sectors spending four months in the same place generates connections that tend to last well beyond the fellowship year.
What You Need to Prepare for Application
The application is submitted entirely online.
Required materials:
- Online application form
- CV maximum 3 pages
- Personal statement maximum 1000 words
- Three letters of recommendation
The personal statement is where most applications are won or lost. 1000 words to explain who you are, what you have built, why this fellowship fits where you are going, and what you would contribute to a cohort of accomplished peers from around the world.
Generic statements do not survive the review process. The committee reads applications from professionals across every sector imaginable. Clarity about your specific work, your actual impact, and your genuine reasons for applying matters far more than impressive language or a long list of credentials.
Three recommendation letters are a significant ask. Contact your recommenders early, ideally now, not in November. Give them enough context about the program and your application so they can write something specific rather than a general endorsement of your professional character.
The 2 December deadline sounds distant. It is not once you factor in the time needed for three recommenders to submit strong letters.
