What is the Gulbenkian Institute Fellowship 2027?
This fellowship is run by the Gulbenkian Institute for Advanced Study. It gives you quiet time to work on your research or creative project. You do not have to take classes or do heavy teaching. You join a mixed group of scholars and artists from different fields. The main goal is to support free thinking and original work in a calm place in Lisbon.

Who Can Apply
The eligibility framework is genuinely broad, but it does carry specific expectations about academic or intellectual standing.
You are eligible if you are:
- A researcher or scholar of any nationality
- An established academic with a record of intellectual contribution
- An independent academic who has made substantial contributions outside formal institutions
- A retired professor
- A professional with notable academic or intellectual accomplishments
- A practicing artist with significant creative output
Your proposed project must:
- Be suitable for residential independent study
- Not require experimental equipment or laboratory facilities
- Be original research or a creative project you’re actively working on
One restriction applies to returning applicants: Former GIAS fellows cannot reapply within five years of completing a previous fellowship. If you’ve held a Gulbenkian fellowship before, check whether your five-year window has cleared.
No PhD. No language requirement. No nationality filter. But the selection board is looking for people who have already demonstrated serious intellectual or creative commitment — not emerging scholars at the beginning of their careers.
