The Senckenberg Global Fellowship is not a competitive grant you apply for and wait to hear back about. It is a collaborative research placement, and the most important step happens before the application form even opens.
You need a scientific host at Senckenberg first.
Without a confirmed host and a letter of support from them, the application cannot succeed. For researchers who have not started that conversation yet, the 1 October deadline is closer than it looks.

What Senckenberg Actually Is
Senckenberg is one of Germany’s largest natural history research organizations. It operates across seven locations in Germany and maintains millions of scientific collection objects. It holds specimens, geological samples, fossil records, and genomic databases spanning biodiversity conservation, ecology, anthropology, geology, genomics and entomology.
For researchers working in natural sciences, access to collections at this scale is genuinely significant. Many institutions in the Global South have limited access to comparable infrastructure. That is precisely why this fellowship exists.
The Host Requirement Starts Here Not With the Application Form
A letter of support from a scientific host at Senckenberg is mandatory for every application. The host must explain how the proposed research fits within Senckenberg’s research landscape, how it complements the expertise of their group and what value it adds to the organization and the wider field.
That letter takes time to arrange. Hosts need to understand your project, agree to supervise it and write something specific and credible, not a generic endorsement.
Before opening the application form, researchers should:
- Browse the research groups across Senckenberg’s seven locations
- Identify scientists whose expertise overlaps with your proposed work
- Contact them directly with a clear concise description of your project and why their group is the right environment for it
- Allow enough time for the host to review your proposal and write the support letter before 1 October
A cold application without prior contact almost never produces a strong host letter. Start this process now if you have not already.
Who Is Eligible
The fellowship is exclusively for researchers from the Global South. Senckenberg uses the OECD’s country classification to determine eligibility.
Eligible regions include much of sub-Saharan Africa, South and Southeast Asia, Latin America and parts of the Middle East and Pacific. Countries specifically mentioned in the application materials include
- Zimbabwe
- Zambia
- South Africa
- Nigeria
- Kenya
- Ghana
- Ethiopia
- Uganda
- Tanzania
- and many others.
Researchers who are not eligible regardless of nationality:
- Those with permanent residence in Germany
- Those residing in EU member states
- Those based in North America or Australia
- Nationality alone does not determine eligibility. Current location and residency status matter.
- A Nigerian researcher based in the Netherlands for example would not qualify under this framework.
- Applicants must be either doctoral candidates or postdoctoral researchers.
- The application form accepts those holding a Master’s degree for PhD fellowship applicants or a PhD or Dr. qualification for postdoctoral applicants.
Fellowship Duration Three or Six Months
Two duration options are available for both PhD and postdoctoral applicants:
- Three months the standard fellowship period
- Up to six months available where the longer duration is essential to the research project

Each location has its own research strengths. Matching your project to the right location and the right host within that location is more important than choosing based on city preference.
Fellowship Coverage
The program does not publicly state a fixed monthly stipend in the available documentation. Researchers should clarify financial conditions directly with their prospective host or through the official Senckenberg fellowship portal before applying.
What is confirmed. Travel costs are reimbursed up to €1200 after arrival in Germany. Researchers whose travel costs exceed this amount need to arrange alternative funding for the difference.
Two important financial conditions apply to all fellows:
- Parallel project funding is not permitted during the fellowship period. Senckenberg explicitly aims to prevent double funding.
- Fellows must begin their placement within three months of approval. Visa processing delays may qualify for exceptions but planning timelines carefully from the start is strongly advisable.

How Applications Are Judged (Application Process)
A scientific selection committee composed of senior Senckenberg researchers evaluates all applications against three criteria:
- Scientific potential to achieve the proposed project’s objectives
- Scientific excellence of the proposed research
- Prospects for follow-up: the likelihood of developing a subsequent project and securing additional funding after the fellowship
- Results are expected approximately eight weeks after the deadline.
